American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary, founded in 1919, has nearly 1 million diverse members who volunteer extensively, raising millions of dollars for various charities, including support for veterans. Originally assisting The American Legion, it has developed its own identity while broadening its interests to benefit the entire community. Comprising male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and descendants of Legion members, it operates in every state and some foreign countries, standing in solidarity with American ideals.

Sons of The American Legion

The Sons of The American Legion (SAL), established in 1932 as part of The American Legion, is open to boys and men with military-serving parents or grandparents. Together with The American Legion and The American Legion Auxiliary, they form the Legion Family, dedicated to upholding American traditions, supporting children, veterans, and promoting good citizenship. SAL offers study programs like “The Ten Ideals,” focusing on patriotism, health, knowledge, training, honor, faith, helpfulness, courtesy, reverence, and comradeship. Completing this program allows members to advance to the “Five-Point Program of Service,” which covers patriotism, citizenship, discipline, leadership, and legionism.

American Legion Riders

In 1993, Chuck “Tramp” Dare and Bill “Polka” Kaledas of American Legion Post 396 in Garden City, Mich., had an idea to create a motorcycle enthusiasts association within the Legion. They shared this idea with Michigan Department Adjutant Hubert Hess, who approved and provided instructions for managing the program at the post level. Post 396 members passed a resolution to create the “American Legion Riders” program, and with 19 other founding members, Dare and Kaledas established a central source to ensure that Riders chapters formed as Legion family members who love to ride, rather than as motorcycle clubs or gangs.
